My aim is to elevate your piano creativity. Topics include piano chords, jazz chord voicings, fills, improvisation, intros, endings, practice techniques, arrangements, and more.
What Do We Typically Cover?
Surely, if you are considering online lessons, you would like to have an idea of what you are in for. Actually, this will vary depending on your specific situation and goals. I coach people of various backgrounds who have their own unique goals. Below are a few scenarios:
The Absolute Beginner
With absolutely no experience, an individual who would like to experience some satisfying results in a relatively short amount of time is provided with enough technical strategies and knowledge to start having fun with chords right away. I find that once you can gain some momentum while actually playing with harmony in a fun and musical way, your incentive to want to take things further is enhanced. We’ll see how these chords are put together to form songs that you’ve become familiar with. Although reading music may be on your priority list, it is not necessarily an obstacle that you’ll have to deal with with prior to actually making some music. It is my experience that waiting to actually have fun playing while enduring reading fundamentals can actually hinder progress. After all, did you never speak your language until you learned to spell words or read phrases and sentences? Of course not. You can count on the fact that your specific situation will be given respect and we will approach things from an angle that will work for you.
The Novice Who Has Played a Few Chords & Perhaps a Song or Two
Often is the case that a person has learned how to play some chords and even applied them in the context of some favorite songs. We immediately take advantage of your technical ability to play those chords and expand on this skill by getting you to play those chords in more creative ways. The fact that you can play even a few chords means that your confidence with playing any given chord is possible. We’ll explore triads (the four basic chord qualities), all types of 7th chords, and more… but it will all be presented in its own time so that you can gradually incorporate your new understanding into the context of the project at hand. You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of music and how to create your own style at a pace that’s right for you.
The Cocktail Piano Enthusiast
The player who has learned a fair amount about 7th chords and actually can play them in the context of a song often wants to take his or her playing to new levels. Perhaps you love those jazz standards and would genuinely like to learn how to play a ballad in a way that sounds “pro” in a cocktail setting. Cocktail piano is a specialty of mine. We’ll explore more about chords, chord voicings, piano fills, improvisation, arranging, and a whole lot more. We will explore how to make the most of a lead sheet. In short, you will learn how to enjoy a high level of confidence as you perform those favorite tunes with flair.
