“What About Practice? I Don’t Know If I Have The Time”
Let me share something with you. As a youngster, I was captivated by both magic and music. My parents, though not musicians themselves, had a deep appreciation for music. Our home was always filled with the sound of the radio, and my mother would sing along as she did household chores. Despite their inclination that I wouldn’t last long at this new hobby, my parents provided me with piano lessons.
Following instructions and practicing didn’t come naturally to me. The constant reminder to “practice, practice, practice” from my parents was something I grew to resent. It seemed to clash with the playfulness and freedom that I associated with childhood. I enjoyed both performing magic tricks and playing songs I loved, especially when I could show off a bit. But the idea of painstaking practice felt like a chore. I’m being honest when I share with you that I often never practiced what I was told until the night before my lesson. But I still liked to play and kept up with the lessons.
Years later, as a piano coach, I keep this experience in mind when working with my clients. They quickly learn that I’m not the type of teacher who insists on practice simply because it’s expected. Instead, I share my own journey, emphasizing that enjoyment and passion are crucial. I want them to see that they can achieve positive results without sacrificing their love for music.
This approach builds a strong bond with my clients. They appreciate my honesty and authenticity, and it instills confidence in them. They realize they can have fun with music without putting the rest of their lives on hold. After all, if their teacher could do it, why can’t they?

Before long, you were creating phrases and sentences that got your message across… and you achieved all that before ever learning to read or write. It all call came quite naturally. That’s how expressing yourself through music ought to be.
I would like to mention here that you don’t need a goal of playing Carnegie Hall in order to enjoy incorporating music into your lifestyle. You truly can enjoy this experience without reliving those childhood feelings of “anticipating the report card” or having to live up to anyone else’s unreasonable expectations. Trust me, you’ll make the grade. This is about you and for you. Indeed, you can make this happen for yourself. It’s been proven via my own experience with my clients time and time… and time again.
You can start making music today. You don’t need to wait like some people might have you believe. As your confidence quickly develops, you’ll have the desire to continue and take things further. But it should be fun from the very beginning. Make sense? I thought so. Let’s get started.
